Four Levels of Hospice Care

The Four Levels of Hospice Care

Since 2011, Hospice Services at Methodist ElderCare has been providing services to Central Ohio residents. Because hospice patients may require differing intensities of care during the course of their disease, our services focus on Four Levels of Care including:

  • Routine Home Care: The most common level of hospice care. Routine home care is provided when an individual has elected to receive hospice care at their residence, which could be their private home, an assisted living facility or a nursing facility.
  • Continuous Care / Crisis Care: Assigned when a patient has a medical crisis that requires close medicinal attention. Inpatient care can be arranged or a hospice provider can provide round-the-clock care in the home. When the crisis is over, the patient returns to routine home care.
  • General Inpatient Care (GIP): Provides pain control or other acute symptom management, which cannot be provided in any other setting. General Inpatient Care begins when efforts to manage symptoms have been ineffective. This type of care can be offered in a Medicare-certified hospital, hospice inpatient facility, or nursing facility that has a registered nurse available 24-hours a day to provide direct patient care.
  • Respite Care: Provides temporary relief to the patient’s primary caregiver. Respite care can be in a senior community, hospital, or hospice facility with 24-hour nursing care available. This type of facility guarantees that the patient’s needs are met. Respite care is offered for a maximum of 5 consecutive days.

Hospice physicians and nurses are experts in pain and symptom control. They work continuously to develop new protocols that keep patients comfortable, alert and independent as possible. Hospice practitioners are versed in prescribing medications to use simply and in combination to provide the best results for each patient.
